I recently interviewed at j2 Global and they decided they liked me enough to offer me a job in Santa Barbara. I’ll be doing web development there, which should be fun. I start on Jan 3rd after all my Thanksgiving and Christmas plans happen. I’m pretty excited about the job and the prospect of actually making money. While I won’t get to do Rails (at least nothing is planned), I will get to do some Agile stuff and learn Java.
Moving to a new place means getting a new apartment, so I spent Monday and Tuesday looking, and I found one. It is located just north of La Cumbre Plaza, between Goleta and Santa Barbara. It is 3.9 miles from my work, which means that I can use the bus or bike to get to work. I get the apartment on the 4th, but I won’t be around then, so I’ll just have it until I move in sometime after Christmas.

Congratulations - wow, a member of the working class. You should be able to bike to work easily from where you are. Gma and I used to shop at La Cumbre when we stayed in SB visiting you dad. (Had to restock the fridge occasionally). Ordered new computer - will need some help xfering stuff when you are here. It is a Dell XPS 600 w/21 inch wide angle fp - lots of goodies. Will buy new printer - probably the HP 3310 unless you know of something better. That will allow me to get rid of three big ol clunkers. This is the media version so has full TV capability plus DVR, so I won’t have to buy a new TV for my office. When you look for furniture for your place (if you don’t have an IKEA store handy), look at some of the consignment stores - a fairly recent phenomenon - that usually has real good deals on used furniture. We can probably give you some kitchen stuff and maybe a few other things depending on what you need. Knowing you a fouton, pillow and computer are all that’s required. Well, it sure sounds like things are working out well - look forward to seeing you up here. Lots of love gma and gpa

Congratulations Brian - J2 looks like a good company, and what could be better than living and working in S.B.
My advice is to max out your credit cards and get up to your neck in all sorts of debt a.s.a.p. so you’ll always have a reason to get up and go to work in the a.m. Don’t forget, the first 4-5 months of the year you are working exclusively for good old Uncle Sam - But come June, it’s all for you! Enjoy - and invite us over lots because we always need an excuse to go head up that way.

Hi Brian,
Welcome to j2 Global. I’m a marketing guy who works with the developers in the SB office, and came across your blog on a random search. Looking forward to meeting you when you start next year. We can use the help here.
Oh, and I know a few guys in SB working on an independant Rails project for fun, in case you really start to miss it. I could put you in touch with them after you get settled in.
Best,
-Jason

Sounds great!! Maybe we’ll get to visit you in Santa Barbara one of these days. How big is your apt? Big enough for a family of 4 to visit?? We’re really proud of you and you’re making us all feel old (-: See you Tuesday! Love ya, AJ
